26 September Flight USA to VIENNA, AUSTRIA

27 September. Arrive Vienna, Austria.  Transfer from the Vienna Airport by private transportation to our hotel in the heart of Vienna.  This great imperial city boasts world class dining and entertainment and we are in the center of it.  This afternoon we’ll explore our neighborhood, walk through the famous Museum Quarter, perhaps enjoy a coffee on the Ring Strasse at Landtmanns and shop the 5th Avenue of the city, Kartner Street.  Overnight Vienna.

28 September.  We start the day with a tour of the central city on a street car that follows the ancient path of the medieval wall around the heart of town.  We’ll pass the Votiv Church, the University, the Museum Complex, the Austrian Parliament and the world renowned Opera House.  Later we’ll visit the Hofburg Palace, political center of the Hapsburg Empire for 600 years.  Overnight Vienna.

29 September. The day starts with a visit to the Royal Stables to see the Lippizaner Horses do their morning routine.  These famous horses perform all over the world and are the subject of countless movies and novels.  Later we’ll stroll the central city and perhaps sample a Sacher torte, the rich chocolate cake named after the hotel where European royal families often stayed in the 19th century.  Art and shopping venues are just blocks away to spend the remainder of the day at leisure.  Overnight Vienna.

30 September. A high speed train takes us this morning to MUNICH, city of brats and room-pah bands and the one and only real OKTOBERFEST.  Our hotel is only moments walk from the station and from downtown.  This afternoon choose to spend time shopping in the central city or visit the WWII era Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial in the nearby village of Dachau.  Overnight Munich.

01 October. Today we visit the real OKTOBERFEST!  The beer tents, carnival rides, giant pretzels, roast chickens and brats and oom-pah bands will entertain us for hours as we stroll from tent to tent sampling the different beers of the many breweries.  Overnight Munich.

02. October.  We board the Inter City Express this morning and speed to northwest Germany, to the capital of Germany, BERLIN.  We stay in the heart of the old city of East Berlin.  This afternoon we will walk to the Brandenburg Gate, see the bricks inlaid into the street that mark where the Wall once stood, and the delightful Tierpark, the green lungs of the city.  Overnight Berlin.

03 October. This morning we will visit the German Parliament Building and walk up into the giant glass dome on top for exciting views of the city, both East and West Berlin.  Later we will stroll down the Unter den Linden Street, see the Jewish Memorial, the Bebelplatz where the Nazis burned books, the Berlin Opera House and the German History Museum, on our history walk.  Shop this afternoon at the elegant department stores near Gendarmen Platz or relax in a cafe and people watch.  Overnight Berlin.

04. October. A few minutes by subway and we arrive this morning in West Berlin, the walled island of democracy and freedom from 1945 to 1990.  This conclave was home to over 2 million citizens trapped inside East Germany and surrounded by Soviet forces.  This part of the city survived in large part because of the determination of the USA and help from the nation of West Germany.  Today it has a lively street scene, lots of public sculptures and excellent stores and restaurants.  After our stroll around we can sample some of the famous pastries in the cafe of the department store, Kaufhaus des Westens, or KDW, the Harrods of Berlin.  Overnight Berlin.

05 October. A transport takes us to the new Berlin Airport for our return flight to the USA.
